Reporting on our sustainable investment performance
The Guardians’ key sustainable investment performance measure is the annual PRI Assessment.
Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) assessments
We participate in the annual United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) assessments. The PRI are the globally accepted best practice principles for sustainable investment. The Fund achieved its highest ratings to-date in the latest PRI Assessment Report. The 2025 assessment, which looked at our approach to responsible investment across the portfolio, rated the Fund:
-
Five stars (96%) for policy, governance and strategy
-
Five stars (91%) for listed equity, passive
-
Five stars (91%) for listed equity, active
-
Four stars (70%) confidence-building measures
The PRI assessment is a key measure of the Guardians’ performance on sustainable investment. Achieving a high rating for the Policy, Governance and Strategy pillars in the PRI assessment is the measure included in the Guardians’ Statement of Intent.
Other measures
We set additional performance measures in our Statement of Intent on which we report in our Annual Report, website and other public reporting. These measures include climate change reporting, impact investment reporting and publishing our annual report in line with the Global Reporting Initiative.
We publish an annual Climate Change Report aligned with the New Zealand Climate-Related Disclosure Standards. This includes a third-party assured carbon footprint showing progress against the Fund’s carbon reduction targets, and reporting on progress towards a net zero portfolio as required by our Paris Aligned Asset Owner Commitment.
We also report annually on the dollar amount of assets under management in impact investments. The Guardians defines impact investments as investments made with the intent to deliver measurable positive social and/or environmental impacts, and the Fund’s expected risk-adjusted return.
Taken as a whole, these measures reflect our commitment to strengthening our investment approach and stepping up our sustainable investment practice over time. They also support transparency by showing how we monitor and report on the implementation of our sustainable investment approach.
Additional global benchmarking
Global SWF Governance, Sustainability and Resilience Scoreboard
We participate in the annual Global SWF Governance, Sustainability and Resilience (GSR) Scoreboard, an independent assessment of best practice among sovereign wealth funds and public pension funds. The scoreboard assesses investors against 25 criteria covering governance, sustainability and resilience, including governance structure and processes, responsible investment policies and practices, and the ability to manage liquidity and operational risk.
The assessment helps us benchmark our approach against global peers and identify areas for continued improvement. In 2026, the NZ Super Fund achieved a 100% score in the GSR Scoreboard for the third year in a row and was one of nine investors globally to achieve a perfect score.
Responsible Investment Association Australasia
The NZ Super Fund participates in the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) benchmark survey of 250 Australasian investment managers. In 2026 RIAA named the NZ Super Fund a Responsible Investment Leader, scoring in approximately the top 20% of all investment managers assessed under its Responsible Investment Scorecard. The Scorecard covers responsible investment commitment, ESG integration, stewardship, capital allocation and transparency.
